PSNI Issues Apology Over 1998 Murder Probe Shortcomings

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has extended a formal apology to the family of a man who was murdered nearly three decades ago. The case, involving the death of 28-year-old Fergal McCusker in 1998, was marred by investigative deficiencies.

Fergal McCusker was tragically killed by the Loyalist Volunteer Force (LVF), a paramilitary group notorious for its violent activities during the Troubles. The investigation into his death was criticised for its inadequacies, which the PSNI has now acknowledged.

The apology follows a review process that highlighted significant flaws in how the case was handled. The PSNI has expressed regret for the distress caused to McCusker’s family, who have endured years of uncertainty and unanswered questions regarding the circumstances of his murder.

This acknowledgment by the PSNI is a part of ongoing efforts to address historical grievances and restore public confidence in law enforcement processes related to unresolved cases from the past.
