US Imposes New Tariffs Affecting EU and China

The United States has announced the implementation of new tariffs on a range of goods from 60 international trading partners, notably impacting the European Union and China. These tariffs, set at rates of 10% and 12.5%, have been imposed amid allegations of insufficient enforcement of bans on forced labour.

This move marks a significant shift in US trade policy, as it targets a broad spectrum of countries and industries. The decision comes as part of a broader strategy to address labour issues in global supply chains, reflecting ongoing concerns about human rights violations.

European and Chinese officials have expressed concern over the tariffs, which are expected to affect a wide array of exports. The impact of these tariffs could lead to increased tensions between the US and its trading partners, potentially sparking retaliatory measures.

While the US administration argues that these tariffs are necessary to uphold ethical labour standards, critics warn that such measures could disrupt international trade and economic relations.
