Diplomatic relations between Russia and Japan have become increasingly strained following Russia’s decision to summon the Japanese ambassador. This move comes after Japan condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to the contested Kuril Islands.
The Kuril Islands, located in Russia’s far east, have long been a point of contention between the two nations. Japan claims sovereignty over the islands, which it refers to as the Northern Territories, while Russia maintains control over them.
Japan’s government expressed strong disapproval of President Putin’s recent visit to the islands, describing it as an affront to their national interests. In response, Russia summoned Japan’s ambassador to express its dissatisfaction with Tokyo’s stance.
This escalation in diplomatic tensions highlights the ongoing challenges in resolving territorial disputes in the region. Both countries have yet to reach a satisfactory agreement, despite numerous attempts at negotiation over the years.
