Low Saturday Attendance Among Public-Only Consultants Revealed

Recent data from the Health Service Executive (HSE) highlights a concerning trend: only a small fraction of hospital consultants holding new public-only contracts are working on Saturdays.

The figures reveal that merely one in seven of these consultants are present for Saturday shifts. This statistic brings to light potential challenges in staffing and service provision during weekends, a time when hospital services remain crucial.

Additionally, the report indicates that only about one-third of these consultants are participating in extended day shifts. This raises questions about the effectiveness of the new contracts in ensuring comprehensive healthcare coverage beyond regular hours.

These statistics could prompt discussions on how to improve consultant participation in extended and weekend shifts, ensuring that the healthcare system can meet patient needs effectively at all times.
