The National Treasury Management Agency (NTMA) is still in the process of recovering €2.5 million following a significant phishing attack last summer. This incident saw a total of €5 million taken, with only half of it returned to date.
The attack was a sophisticated voice phishing, or ‘vishing’, operation that successfully deceived the agency into transferring the substantial sum. The NTMA has been actively collaborating with financial institutions and law enforcement agencies in an effort to recoup the stolen funds.
Efforts to retrieve the remaining amount have proven challenging, with the agency facing obstacles in tracing the money. Despite the difficulties, the NTMA remains committed to pursuing all available avenues to recover the funds and has been reviewing its security protocols to prevent future breaches.
The incident has highlighted the increasing threat of cyber fraud targeting financial institutions and the importance of robust security measures. The NTMA’s experience serves as a cautionary tale for other organisations to enhance their vigilance against similar attacks.
