The Taoiseach has addressed the Dáil, stating that survivors of the abuse perpetrated by Bill Kenneally are owed an apology from the State. This statement comes in response to the findings of a Commission of Investigation report that shed light on the extent of the abuse and the failures in handling it.
The report revealed significant shortcomings in how authorities managed allegations against Kenneally, a former basketball coach and paedophile. The investigation uncovered systemic issues and mishandling that contributed to the prolonged suffering of the survivors.
In his remarks, the Taoiseach emphasized the importance of acknowledging these failures and the need to offer a formal apology to those affected. The government is now under pressure to act on the report’s recommendations and ensure that such oversights are not repeated.
Survivors and advocates have long campaigned for recognition and justice. The Taoiseach’s statement marks a significant step towards acknowledging the pain endured by those affected and the responsibility of the State in addressing past wrongs.
