A protest that had blocked access to Galway Port has come to an end following an early morning intervention by gardaí. The blockade, which had been set up by fuel protesters, was resolved peacefully, allowing normal operations to resume at the port.
The demonstration, which started earlier this week, was organised by a group opposing recent fuel price hikes. Protesters had positioned themselves on the bridge leading to the port, effectively halting all traffic and disrupting port activities.
Gardaí arrived at the scene in the early hours to remove the blockade, ensuring that the port could be secured and reopened for business. The operation was carried out without any reported incidents, and traffic to and from the port has now resumed.
The protest had sparked concern among local businesses and port authorities, who rely on the port’s daily operations for trade and transport. With the removal of the blockade, normalcy has been restored, alleviating fears of prolonged disruption.
The swift response by authorities highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding fuel prices and the impact of protests on vital infrastructure.
