Joe Costello Alleges Misuse in RTÉ Libel Defence Case

Joe Costello, a former Labour TD, has initiated legal proceedings against RTÉ, accusing the broadcaster of failing to inform him about its defence strategy in a defamation lawsuit. The case in question relates to a 2015 radio broadcast that became the subject of legal action by Sinn Féin activist Nicky Kehoe.

Costello alleges that he was used as a ‘fall guy’ in RTÉ’s defence, claiming that the broadcaster did not notify him of its plans or involve him adequately in the process. The controversy stems from remarks made during the broadcast that led Kehoe to pursue legal action.

The former TD argues that RTÉ’s actions left him exposed and unprepared to address the allegations in court. He contends that this omission has had significant personal and professional repercussions.

As the case unfolds, it raises critical questions about the responsibilities of broadcasters in defamation defences and the communication required with involved parties.
