Rare Greenland Shark Discovered on Sligo Beach

A Greenland shark, a rare visitor to Irish shores, was recently found washed up on a beach in County Sligo. This marks the first recorded instance of the species being discovered on the Irish coastline.

The National Museum of Ireland has taken possession of the shark for further study. The discovery has generated significant interest due to the rarity of the species in these waters.

Greenland sharks are known for their longevity, often living for centuries, and typically inhabit the deep waters of the Arctic and North Atlantic Oceans. Their appearance on Irish shores is an unusual event, prompting curiosity and further investigation by marine experts.

Authorities are keen to understand the reasons behind the shark’s presence in Ireland, considering both environmental factors and the shark’s natural behaviors.
