Ombudsman Highlights Urgent Need for Reform in Child Care System

The Ombudsman for Children, Niall Muldoon, has issued a stark warning to the government about the alarming conditions faced by young people in state care. His comments follow a revealing investigation by RTÉ, which shed light on the severe challenges within the care system.

Describing the findings as ‘stomach-churning’, Muldoon emphasised that the state’s current approach is failing those it is meant to protect. He urged authorities to take swift and decisive action to address these systemic issues.

RTÉ’s investigation uncovered distressing conditions and inadequate support for vulnerable children, prompting widespread concern among the public and policymakers. The Ombudsman stressed that without immediate reform, the welfare of these young individuals remains at significant risk.

Calls for legislative and procedural changes have intensified, with many advocating for increased oversight and resources to ensure the safety and well-being of children in state care.
