In a significant legal win, Colombian pop star Shakira has been acquitted of tax fraud charges in Spain. The court ruling marks the end of a prolonged legal battle over her tax residency status in 2011.
The Spanish authorities had accused Shakira of failing to pay taxes on her worldwide income, asserting that she spent more than 183 days in the country that year, thus qualifying her as a tax resident. However, the judge found that the evidence presented was insufficient to prove her residency beyond doubt.
Under Spanish law, individuals are considered tax residents if they reside in the country for more than half the year. The prosecution’s inability to substantiate this claim led to the dismissal of charges against the singer.
Shakira’s acquittal underscores the complexities involved in high-profile tax cases, where the burden of proof lies heavily on the authorities to demonstrate residency and financial obligations.
