A Spanish citizen, who was recently evacuated from a cruise ship, has been confirmed to have hantavirus, according to Spain’s Health Ministry. The individual is currently under quarantine in a military hospital in Madrid.
The evacuee was among those brought back to Spain earlier this month following an outbreak aboard the cruise ship. While the primary concern was initially COVID-19, this case highlights the presence of other infectious threats.
Hantavirus, which is typically spread by rodents, can cause severe respiratory issues and is not directly transmissible between humans. Spanish health authorities are monitoring the situation closely to prevent any potential spread and ensure the safety of others who were on the ship.
The Health Ministry has reassured the public that stringent measures are in place to handle such cases, aiming to prevent any further complications.
