Taoiseach Micheál Martin has emphasized the urgency of making a new treatment for Friedreich’s Ataxia available to patients in Ireland promptly. This condition, a rare genetic disorder, impacts the nervous system and muscles, leading to severe physical challenges.
The Taoiseach expressed a strong commitment to ensuring that those affected by the condition can access the treatment without unnecessary delays. Highlighting the significance of this development, Martin stated that it is vital for patients to benefit from advancements in medical therapies as soon as possible.
Friedreich’s Ataxia affects approximately one in 50,000 people worldwide, with symptoms typically emerging between the ages of 5 and 15. The disorder progressively worsens, often resulting in the need for a wheelchair, and can also lead to heart disease and diabetes.
