A 51-year-old businessman has been handed a two-month suspended sentence after admitting to obstructing operations by climbing on an oil tanker at the Whitegate Refinery in County Cork. The incident occurred during recent fuel protests.
The man, whose actions were part of a larger wave of demonstrations against rising fuel costs, was also fined €1,500 by the court. The protests have highlighted growing public discontent over energy prices.
During the court proceedings, it was acknowledged that while the protest was intended to draw attention to the issue, the method chosen was disruptive to refinery operations. The sentence reflects a balance between recognizing the protest’s intent and addressing the legal breach.
The suspended sentence means the businessman will avoid jail time as long as he meets conditions set by the court over the next two years.
