In a groundbreaking move, prisoners at the Dóchas Centre and the Training Unit within Mountjoy Prison in Dublin will soon be able to receive phone calls directly in their cells. This development comes as part of a new pilot project aimed at enhancing communication between inmates and their families.
The initiative will permit inmates to receive calls from pre-approved friends and family, marking the first time such direct communication has been allowed within the Irish prison system. This change is expected to improve the wellbeing of prisoners by fostering closer ties with their loved ones.
Prison authorities are optimistic about the project’s potential to positively impact inmate behaviour and reintegration prospects by maintaining strong family connections. The pilot’s outcomes will likely inform future policies regarding prisoner communications.
The introduction of direct calls to cells represents a shift in the traditional approach to prisoner contact, which has typically been limited to monitored phone booths or scheduled visits.
