A new study conducted by Maynooth University in collaboration with the Probation Service has found a notable increase in the number of restorative justice referrals from courts over the past year.
The research indicates a growing trend in the judicial system towards implementing restorative justice practices, which focus on reconciliation between offenders and victims. This approach contrasts with traditional punitive methods and aims to address the harm caused by crime through dialogue and agreement.
The increase in referrals suggests that courts are increasingly recognising the benefits of restorative justice, which can lead to reduced recidivism and better outcomes for both victims and offenders. The study highlights the importance of these practices in fostering rehabilitation and community healing.
Experts believe that the continued emphasis on restorative justice may contribute to more sustainable crime reduction strategies, offering a complementary alternative to conventional legal proceedings.
