SIPTU Urges RTÉ to Boycott Israeli Football Matches

The Services, Industrial, Professional and Technical Union (SIPTU) has issued a call to the national broadcaster RTÉ, urging it to abstain from airing any scheduled football matches featuring Israeli teams. This move aligns with SIPTU’s broader stance on international solidarity and ethical broadcasting.

In a formal communication, SIPTU outlined its position, emphasizing the importance of ethical considerations in broadcasting decisions. The union has committed to backing RTÉ employees who decide not to participate in the production or coverage of these fixtures, reinforcing the union’s dedication to supporting workers’ rights and conscientious objection.

The request from SIPTU comes amidst ongoing debates about the role of media and broadcasters in geopolitical conflicts. By advocating for this boycott, SIPTU aims to highlight and challenge the ethical responsibilities of broadcasters in relation to global issues.

RTÉ has yet to release a statement in response to SIPTU’s request, leaving open the question of how the broadcaster will navigate this complex issue.
