As Ireland prepares to assume the EU Presidency, the country’s bishops have emphasised the importance of a value-driven approach. In discussions with the Taoiseach, the bishops highlighted key values such as human dignity, solidarity, democracy, and social cohesion as essential guiding principles.
The Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the EU (COMECE) and the Conference of European Churches (CEC) both stressed that these values should underpin Ireland’s leadership. The organisations believe that focusing on these principles will foster a more inclusive and united Europe.
In their discussions, the bishops underscored the potential impact of Ireland’s presidency in shaping the EU’s future. They urged the government to take a leading role in promoting policies that reflect these core values, benefiting not only Ireland but also the wider European community.
As the presidency approaches, these conversations highlight the significant role Ireland can play in steering the EU towards a more value-centered governance.
