HSE Halts Plastic Card Issuance After Cyber-Attack

The Health Service Executive (HSE) has temporarily suspended the issuance of plastic medical cards and several other health-related cards following a cyber-attack. This precautionary measure aims to protect sensitive data while the situation is being addressed.

The cyber-attack has impacted the distribution of plastic medical cards, European Health Insurance Cards, GP visit cards, drugs payment scheme cards, and long-term illness cards. The HSE is currently investigating the breach to ascertain the extent of the attack and to secure the affected systems.

As the HSE works to resolve the issue, affected individuals are advised to use alternative means to access healthcare services where possible. The organisation is coordinating with cybersecurity experts to ensure robust measures are in place to prevent future incidents.

The HSE has not provided a timeline for when the issuance of these cards will resume, but it is prioritising the restoration of services and safeguarding patient information during this critical period.
