Pope Leo XIV has officially accepted the resignation of Archbishop Luis Mariano Montemayor from his role as the Apostolic Nuncio to Ireland. The decision brings an end to Archbishop Montemayor’s tenure as the Vatican’s diplomatic representative in Ireland.
Appointed to the post in 2018, Archbishop Montemayor has played a significant role in fostering relations between the Holy See and Ireland. His tenure was marked by efforts to engage with both religious and political communities across the country.
The resignation, which is a customary practice for nuncios upon reaching the age of 75, marks a transition in the Vatican’s diplomatic presence in Ireland. The Holy See is expected to announce a new successor in the coming months, continuing the tradition of strong ties between the two states.
As the Apostolic Nuncio, the archbishop’s responsibilities included acting as a liaison between the Vatican and the Irish Catholic Church, as well as representing the Pope to the government of Ireland. His departure will initiate a new chapter in the diplomatic relations overseen by the Holy See.
