The Social Democrats have renewed their call for a complete ban on disposable barbecues as temperatures continue to rise across the country. They argue that the Government’s current recommendation for retailers to voluntarily halt sales is insufficient to address the heightened fire risk during the ongoing heatwave.
The party has raised concerns about the potential for disposable barbecues to spark wildfires, particularly in dry, grassy areas. They emphasize that a formal prohibition would be more effective in mitigating these risks compared to the existing non-binding advice.
Currently, the Government has advised shops and consumers to refrain from selling and using these products, but this has not been enforced through legislation. The Social Democrats believe that concrete action is necessary to protect both the environment and public safety as high temperatures persist.
As the debate continues, environmental groups have also voiced support for stricter measures, aligning with calls to prioritize safety and environmental conservation during extreme weather conditions.
