Passengers travelling on many of Ireland’s intercity rail routes are voicing frustration over the lack of on-board catering services, which have been suspended since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. While those on the Cork to Dublin or Belfast routes can enjoy refreshments, others must bring their own provisions.
The absence of catering is particularly noticeable on longer journeys where passengers have grown accustomed to the convenience of being able to purchase drinks and snacks. Despite the easing of pandemic restrictions and a return to normality in many public services, the tea-trolley service has yet to resume.
Travellers and regular commuters have been vocal about the need for Irish Rail to reinstate these services, highlighting the inconvenience and the lack of amenities as a significant downgrade in passenger experience. The situation has prompted calls for action to restore the service to its previous standard.
Irish Rail has not specified when, or if, the full catering service will be reinstated, leaving many passengers uncertain about future travel arrangements.
