Transport Infrastructure Ireland has reported a concerning rise in wrong-way driving incidents on the country’s motorways. The Motorway Operations Control Centre recorded 62 such incidents so far this year, marking a 32% increase compared to previous data.
This alarming trend poses serious safety risks for motorists and highlights the need for heightened awareness and preventive measures. Wrong-way driving, while relatively rare, can lead to severe accidents given the high speeds involved on motorways.
The reasons behind this increase are being investigated, with authorities considering factors such as driver impairment, unfamiliarity with road layouts, and inadequate signage. Efforts to enhance road safety and reduce these occurrences are expected to be prioritized.
