Ratko Mladic, the former Bosnian Serb military leader sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in the Bosnian War, has died. He was serving his sentence at a United Nations detention centre in The Hague, according to a UN official.
Mladic was a key figure during the 1992-95 Bosnian War, and his military strategies were central to the conflict’s most tragic episodes, including the Srebrenica massacre. His conviction for genocide and crimes against humanity marked a significant moment in international justice.
Having been apprehended in 2011 after years on the run, Mladic faced trial at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. In 2017, he was found guilty of multiple war crimes, cementing his legacy as a symbol of one of Europe’s darkest periods since World War II.
His death in custody closes a chapter on a contentious and painful era, but the impacts of his actions continue to reverberate. Victims’ families and survivors still grapple with the aftermath of the atrocities committed during his command.
