Majority of Children in Ireland Rarely Cycle to School

Recent research reveals a significant gap between parental preferences and actual transport habits of children in Ireland. While more than two-thirds of parents express a preference for cycling as their children’s mode of transport to school, nearly 80% of children reportedly never cycle.

The findings highlight a disparity between desired and actual commuting methods. Despite the environmental and health benefits associated with cycling, various factors might be contributing to this low uptake, including concerns about road safety and inadequate cycling infrastructure.

The study urges policymakers to address these concerns, suggesting that improvements in cycling paths and traffic regulations could encourage more children to adopt cycling as a regular school commute option.

The push for cycling is part of a broader initiative to promote sustainable and healthy transport options for schoolchildren. Addressing the barriers that prevent cycling could align actual practices with parental aspirations, resulting in a more environmentally friendly and health-conscious generation.
