Concerns Raised Over Draft National Drug Strategy

The Government’s draft National Drugs Strategy has come under fire from the Network of Local Drug and Alcohol Task Forces, who argue that the plan represents a step backward in addressing drug-related challenges.

The Network expressed concerns that the strategy does not adequately prioritize community involvement and lacks sufficient emphasis on harm reduction approaches. They argue that this could potentially undermine efforts to combat drug misuse effectively.

Critics are particularly worried about the absence of clear commitments to increase funding for local task forces, which are crucial in implementing grassroots interventions. They stress the importance of bolstering these resources to ensure that those affected by drug issues receive the necessary support.

The Government has yet to respond to these criticisms, but stakeholders are urging a reconsideration of the draft to better align with contemporary practices and community needs.
